Speech by Chetan Bhagat at Symbiosis
The below is supposedly a speech by Chetan Bhagat.
Don’t just have career or academic goals. Set goals to give you a balanced, successful life. I use the word balanced before successful. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order.
There is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your breakup. There is no fun in driving a car if your back hurts. Shopping is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions.
“Life is one of those races in nursery school where you have to run with a marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming first. Same is with life where health and relationships are the marble. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die. ……………….
One thing about nurturing the spark – don’t take life seriously. Life is not meant to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up? …………….
It’s ok, bunk a few classes, scoring low in couple of papers, goof up a few interviews, take leave from work, fall in love, little fights with your spouse. We are people, not programmed devices………”
“Don’t be serious, be sincere.”!!
Why windows still leads and not linux
To be fair any *nix distribution is much better than any windows install, that said why does windows occupy such a huge place in everyone’ heart. For a few days back you would have noticed many fb updates with Karmic tags in it. Well i have been tinkering with linux for about a month. I had it earlier but with my isp not providing support i could not do much with it. Albeit while doing some random looking around i found an article for linux connectivity and that was the start.
So back to the topic. Why hasn’t Linux (here i mean the Ubuntu Linux, not that its the only distro but the one am using) scored over Windows
– Am a linux newbie i must say but i think i know a little bit to tinker around. While doing it managed to remove my network manager program and then few wierd half learnt commands later i had no network, my eth1 card was not being recognised at all. i had no clue what was wrong. Now If i was in Windows i would just about go to device manager, remove the device and reload it. Drivers back. I do not see the same in ubuntu, i know there is a way to get it and that means a lot a sudo driven changes. Mind you the average user might find windows device manager threatening, so you do not even bother asking him to do sudo commands on nix
– Seems Ubuntu usage is simple i love how apt simply gets what you need like i do not have to visit 10 sites to get the correct installer. fire up apt and ask for your program, the only problem is do not get anything wrong. Do that and it seems ur up against a huge wall of commands and tweaks
– For some reason there are many quirks in the ubuntu distro
My network dns address gets overwritten by the network manager program. So everytime i boot up i need to put it. the same bug that was present in jaunty for NM not saving gateway info is still present. How the hell did it pass quality with these 2 big quirks i do not get it.
See a computer must work out of the box
1 – Simple configuration – most people want a pc so as to surf, chat etc etc and some social networking and shit like that it Should work.
2 – Mistakes happen so give a way to rectify them aka device manager
Thursday, the day that was just abt usual
Sometimes its just now your day and when that happens, things find a way to go wrong. This happens as you say shit happens and work your way through.
But what you do not get it that people do not like to take responsibilty. No am not talking abt responsiblity for their actions but to take decisions. Even if they know probably what they need to do and may be just ask like dude you want me to make these changes/or like i saw the issue and i think i will fix it this way, let me know your views. These are people who would wait for you even if the issue escalates but not fix it.
Anyways i guess its works ok for them, it works ok for me as well.
Since i am writing the post a day post there does not seem to any anger. Since the window had the same text it had yesterday i posted it.
Burp ! Fart ! !
The above 2 words have lots of negative and funny air to it. I mean fart in a calm quiet place and it makes you an instant hit. Hit for all the bad talks that is. You are the talk of the group that is. You wish.
points to note however
1 everyone Sends one thru the back. The ones that do not make a sound are more dangerous in the smell area.:)
2 noise means velocity. T will go out very fast
that said you must be careful.
How to make less noise
# well actually not
just let it rip
What up
Well its been a while since i have actively blogged, yes been posting some shitty stuff but had to. Anyways i was

The post is brought to you by lekhonee v0.7
Just about nothing
Well i have nothing to do around except work. Bored i guess post twitter and all its a little boring to post to a blog. Well here is a low down on how things have been going
- Post going to Goa which i must say i enjoyed a lot if you leave out the day wasted due to the rains which i wont complain
- Then i went to a place called Jadhavgad an Old fort now transformed to a Star hotel
- Then Diwali
- Then State Elections
Well now its back to work again, i have installed ubuntu and now configured internet access as well so that i super cool
The Goa trip
Planned, re-planned and planned again, this trip did seem like it might just get caught up in the corporate whirlwind that we are all but it was not be, slight delays and rains not withstanding we did have a decent enough to write about.
Landing and Day 1
We landed on October 1 the primary aim of that day was that October 2nd was a dry day and like last year we did not want to have a situation of no booze so me and ei had taken an extra day off to get the preps under way. So we landed up at the hotel. Nothing great but decent enuf to stay, like we were going to stay. We just needed it to sleep in the night and store our luggage and all so that was sufficient.
Our place btw was in Calangute
Right in front of our hotel was “Infanataria”, its a famed dinner and desserts bar as they call it and there was a board which said 5 beers for Rs 100. Look no further we are here. 10 pints later and some Chicken Cafreal and grilled fish and a lot of more pasteries.
– more later
Why am i so irritated?
I have noticed myself getting very agitated and irritated over the last few days and the same is generally at work. But its not work that i am getting at. My work i love, it is everything around it that i am getting hyper about.
Evening brought some calm, but not before the usual getting hyper during the afternoon.
Around evening i was asking myself. What is so important that i am losing sleep over. Probably there is not. I also remembered a friend once telling me, if you do not do it would everything just shut down. Just then i remembered someone saying, “if there is 5 days up and down what is the problem” No there is no problem, its just that why wait for 5 days if you can close it down now.
Well i have thought.
Starting tomorrow morning, my work is all that is for me. Everyone else has to wait in line
Concentration levels have to go up way up.
Yes there is a lot of static that i do not need to hear, so i do need to hear and that is understood. I am not your friend. Am a co-worker lets keep it that way
Before making an opinion wait for 5 seconds and then say it, may be i would find a better way to put it.
Work for 5 days so 5 days do not think about anything other than work for the 8 hours there. Post that no thinking about it.
Primary responsibility is to my head and my heart, everything is second.
Configuring 24Online Client on Linux
Its really great to have a Linux client, more from a learning initiative as showing off to the buddies on how geek are you since there are too many Linux geeks out there. Anyways i had huge trouble in configuring the client. The main reason being am on a dual boot and i have just one computer so if i need to Google i have to reboot to windows and get the information i require.
Well in Ubuntu 9.04 the network connections link is broken, if you get online you might get an update but till then you cannot use the network connections at all
You need to get your hands dirty by opening the interfaces file in the /etc/ directory.
Here are the steps i had to do, well they are spread over a few days due to lack of time and everything else including laziness.
-
from your windows side download the linux client from the server, this is the easier part.
-
Setup your ip by getting to /etc/interfaces file.
gksudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces
auto eth0:1
iface eth0:1 inet static
address 192.168.1.60
netmask 255.255.255.0
network x.x.x.x
broadcast x.x.x.x
gateway x.x.x.xReason for gksudo is that it is a better known practice to using sudo to open graphical editors
-
Now Restart your networking service by running sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
-
Now setup the DNS, note in the windows ip address entering place the dns is at the same place not in ubuntu though
sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf
- now copy the installer tar to the home directory and run $ tar -zxvf CyberoamLinuxClient.tar.gz
- Then post getting inside the directory by running cd crclient <enter>; run ./crclient –s
- You are there
then ./crclient –u
